Cuisine

Peruvian cuisine is internationally renowned for its eclectic mix of indigenous practices, ingredients and Spanish, Japanese and Italian influences brought to the country by immigrants. This interesting mix has led to a great range of food options such as ceviche, lomo saltado, aji de gallina and pollo a la brasa.

However, no visit to Peru is completed without trying guinea pig (cuy). Guinea pigs are a household pet and a delicacy that Peruvians enjoy either baked or barbecued. It has a gamy taste, much like rabbit, and is served whole.

History

Peru has become synonymous with the word Inca, whose pre-colonial civilisation has left an undeniable mark on the landscape and in the modern culture of Peru today.

The Incan civilisation spanned from the 12th century to the early 15th century and expanded from their centre in Cusco to areas as far as southern Colombia, central Chile and the Andean regions of Bolivia. To gain an understanding of this empire, you can visit archaeological sites such as Machu Picchu and Ollantaytambo, and museums that exhibit ancient ceramics, textiles and other artefacts.

Spanish colonisation of Peru and the political instability of the 20th Century has also impacted upon Peru's history and culture, contributing to what it is today.

Popular destinations to catch a wave include Máncora, the Lobitos district, Punta Hermosa, Pacasmayo and of course Chicama.

Chicama is one of the world’s natural miracles; it boasts the world’s longest wave that stretches for over 4 kms. Peru is an inexpensive and uncrowded surfing destination so come catch a wave before the secret is out about the perfect surfing conditions to be found in Peru.
